Church
Church occassionally builds me up but more often winds me up. It was just little things tonight, things that I've gradually noticed since settling into this new church. I'm realising even more that no church is perfect, though I did hope that this one was going to be a little better than my previous church. Grr! Maybe I'll blog later when I'm not so frustrated.

hehe, did they say they were the best church?! ;)
What a good guess! No not really... though they do go on and on about being the best at everything and taking Norwich by storm, which is good I guess but sometimes it seems to be all hype and no God. Think that'll do!
yeah I've noticed that a bit at audacious, the other thing i really noticed last night was although you think "Wow Tom really is close to God" when he is saying things to people that are quite general like "God wants great things from you" which are general and no help at all! I think they do go on about taking norwich by storm too much
It really worried me last week when he was "prophecying" over people (I haven't made up my mind if it's genuine...) and he said to one guy "Now I know you, so I'm not gonna pretend this is from God...", as if he'd hidden behind anonymity with previous people. Then there's the speaking in tongues from the front without any translation, that bugs me.
yeah that bit was a bit odd....as for the speaking in tongues the bible says sumin like there will be speakers and interpreters, I don't have a problem with them speaking in tongues at the front really....it was at a early audacious when he asked someone he was praying for "are you speaking in tongues yet?" which I thought was a bit odd....me and hayley just laughed!
lol! Paul writes in 1 Cor 14 that hymns, words of instuction, revelation, tongues or interpretation should all be done for the strengthening of the church, and if anyone speaks in tongues someone should interpret. If there isn't an interpreter they should do it quietly to themselves (verse 26-28) which is why I have an issue with Tom doing it into the microphone without having any formal interpretation. I don't know a lot/have much (any) experience of these things in church so maybe I'm taking it in the wrong way, but what I see doesn't seem to match up to how the Bible says it should be done.
yeah, what's the point in speaking tongues in a microphone at the front without a translation?
im not sure he means to speak into the microphone he just happens to have it right by his mouth! however translation would be handy sometmies, more out of curiousity than anything else
well he should move away then. Translation in that situation is clearly asked for in the Bible. If he wants to use it as his private prayer - that's fine - but move from the microphone.
What would people coming in who know nothing about tongues think if it's not explained? We need to be inclusive, not exclusive.
As Laura has said, 1 Cor 14 "1Let love be your highest goal, but also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives, especially the gift of prophecy. 2For if your gift is the ability to speak in tongues,[a] you will be talking to God but not to people, since they won't be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. 3But one who prophesies is helping others grow in the Lord, encouraging and comforting them. 4A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally in the Lord, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church."
If he's an experienced leader I think he should be used to how to handle the mic... maybe I'm being too pedantic.
Inclusive/exclusive point is interesting... more ponderings in the making.
yeah I guess he should know how to use the microphone, maybe it's worth asking him about it.
Too scary, he never makes eye contact!
